For beginning fisherman choosing a proper fishing rod can be a complicated process because so many options are available, but hopefully all complications are about to be cleared.

A fishing rod is the core instrument of fishing. It is on average a 6 foot rod usually constructed of steel or fiberglass for basic fishing. Fishing line will be run from the reel at the bottom, to extend beyond the top of the rod where it will hang with a hook on its end. The reel has additional fishing line wrapped around inside, and is what will be used to retract and cast fishing line.

Now that you understand the basics you are ready to select a fishing rod based on your needs. For beginners the most common rod of choice is the fiberglass rod. This is because it is both cheap and very flexible. Although there are different types and lengths of rods based on the type of fish to catch and fishing locations, buying a general purpose fiberglass rod is most likely the best bet for a beginner. It would also be intelligent to be a package beginners fishing rod. This is not only a rod, but comes with various accessories such as hooks, reel, and basic bait. Those are great for small scale basic fishing, and do not require you to know specifics about rods are fishing line, as you will most likely already have both. As you do get more serious fishing rods designed for more specific purposes of varying lengths and materials will be required to catch larger fish at different locations.

If you are not interested in purchasing a beginners rod to start, you could most likely get away with borrowing a rod from friend or family, or even renting one from a store. This is a good way to get a better understanding of how to fish, so you will better know what to look for when purchasing your own fishing rod.
