If you're interested in fishing, but intimidated because you don't know how to tie the correct fishing knots, here is all the information you need. One of the most important fishing knots you'll want to learn is the palomar knot. This basic fishing knot is strong and easy to tie, it's ideal for attaching your hook or lure to the line, and it may be the only knot you need.

The first step is to thread your line through the eye of the hook. Next, double this end back through the same hole, being sure to leave a long enough loop at the end to use in later steps. Now grab the loop you've just made, and make a loose overhand knot, but don't tighten it yet. Put the hook through the loop, then slide your loop onto the line to just above the hook.

Next, hold the hook in one hand and the ends of the line in one other, and pull to tighten the knot. When the knot is partially tightened, you will want to moisten the knot before you pull it completely tight. This will reduce friction when you pull it tight. To make sure the knot is completely tightened, separate the two free ends of the line and pull them in opposite directions. Finally, you'll trim the free ends of the line to a length of about an inch.

This fishing knot is appropriate for all lightweight fishing lines, including braided lines.

Once you've mastered this knot, you'll be ready to move on to other popular fishing knots such as the trilene knot, berkeley braid knot, and the arbor knot.
